Officially an alumni now.

Heading home tomorrow.

Saying goodbye to this room I’ve inhabited for two years.

Set things straight with Boy. If I get a job/this job/come back soon, we will continue as we have been. If not, we will be friends. This is the best resolution that could have come out of this and I am pleased. We have had a good time together, if nothing else.

Obnoxious roommate is being obnoxious and choosing to spend her last night vaguely packing with her boyfriend instead of maybe talking to us.

I’ll be glad to get out of this roommate situation, and I’ll look forward to getting a bigger place, but Tulane has been an amazing four years and I’m sad to see it go.

So I just found a Tumblr that’s meant to be for Asian girls on Tumblr, like they write about things that affect them and other Asian women and that’s pretty cool.

But they have a “no white person commenting” policy, meaning they won’t accept asks from white people and they don’t want comments on reblogs from white people.

I see why this is something they’d want, since white people do tend to like to insert themselves in conversations that have nothing to do with them.

But 1) how do they even know if people are white? If this person doesn’t have pictures up of themselves, how would they tell?

2) Where does this put me? I’m not white. But I’m not Asian (completely) either. Am I allowed to ask questions or not?

They actively searched for people posting about their restaurant just to harass them. They also made lots of posts on Facebook that they probably shouldnt have. Theyre certainly just proving what we saw on TV.

Thats what they say, but they actually have a history going back to 2009-2010 of going after negative reviews like that. Thats how their restaurant got in the spotlight for the show in the first place.

I saw that. There are yelp reviews dating years back that paint a picture of very hostile condescending business owners who take criticism very poorly. The reviews and their old responses make me believe the show may have actually portrayed them fairly accurately.

honestly I am still not over them taking their waitress’s tip, I felt my blood boil watching it.

Yeah. And they “justify” it by saying that they pay their serving staff above minimum wage (but who knows if that’s true?), but even still, it’s deceptive and very possibly illegal. Nobody leaves a tip thinking it’s going to go into the owner’s pocket, and I’d hope that anybody who witnesses how the owners act or the staff are treated would be adjusting their tips upwards.

Like, I hate Gordon Ramsay. I hate the whole concept of the TV show (apparently the British show it was based on was a bit less dramatastic?) and I hate the whole Angry Abusive Shouty Chef persona. Somebody (themadgastronomer I think it was) had a great post about how this idea has pervaded the restaurant industry that this is the way to run a great kitchen and it just seems so toxic. But they just… out-awful him.

And apparently the story is that they wanted to be on the show because they expected to be vindicated, like he’d just come in and tell them everybody was wrong and they were great at everything? Which seems incredible, but I’ve known people who were that far gone into their own world… heck, I’ve run into people on Tumblr who are that far gone.

I don’t like to armchair analyze people I’ve never met</BLATANT AND OBVIOUS LIE>, but there’s a strain of Christianism in their postings that just… it’s like a blog post I saw once about how after Kirk Cameron got “saved”, he completely stopped working on his acting as a craft, and this is apparently really common in a particular strain of U.S. conservative Christians. They certainly have the persecution complex that goes with it.

I will say that I love this show because Ramsay goes after the RIGHT people. He doesn’t go after the cooks working themselves to the bone under terrible management. He doesn’t go after the servers killing themselves to break even every night. He recognizes the lower level workers who are an asset, and he praises them and forces the owners to finally do the same. He goes after the terrible management. And I’ve worked in enough restaurants to know that terrible management abuses their staff and blames all of their failings on the people they barely pay a damn wage to, so I like seeing this renowned chef going in and defending the people that have been paying for incompetence at the highest level.

I too heartily enjoy Gordon Ramsay and it’s true that his British shows are a lot less fire and brimstone- they’re definitely worth a watch if you get BBCA. Also try The F Word if you want to see how Ramsay works with his own kitchen staff :)
